THE BUILDING OF THE CENTER AT MAPLE GROVE
This was going to be a feature-length documentary that tracked the construction of the Center at Maple Grove Cemetery, a 10,000 square foot, multi-use building. But, a regime change in the cemetery's leadership scuttled the film and it was abandoned. But, I still like the work I was doing and I think it deserves to be seen.
The source footage was mostly verité observation shot over two years. There was no script.
In the clip above, you'll see a glimpse of the structure I created for the film. I divided the story into four parts: (1) DOWN, which covered work on the architectural model to the digging of the foundation; (2) UP, which went from the pouring of the foundation to the installation of the roof; (3) IN, which followed work on the building's interior; and (4) OUT, which documented the grand opening celebration of the finished building.
This excerpt shows the end of section one (DOWN) and the beginning of section two (UP), as the building's walls rise from the deep excavation.
